My Experience Writing For Helium: What You Should Know Before Signing Up

No matter who you are, we all can use some extra cash. Many have turned to writing articles for the web for sites like Helium. The following article is about my experience writing for the site, and the inside scoop on how the site works. Writers beware, before you sign up for Helium, or any other site, be sure to read beyond the promises.

It has always been my dream to become a writer, and I decided to make that dream come true by writing web content. After graduating from college, I started looking for a day job, in addition looking for sites to write for. I started writing for Suite101.com and Yahoo Contributor's Network. I earned very little money from those sites. Therefore, I started looking for sites that offered upfront pay instead of revenue share. One day, I stumbled across Helium.com, and decided to join. Since I was new to writing online, I had very little experience and clips, and many sites were turning me down. However, Helium didn't require an application. All I had to do was simply sign up. What is Helium? Helium is a writerÃĢ€™s community where writers can choose from a wide variety of topics from their assignment board. Most available assignments are based on revenue share. However, Helium offers an upfront payment of $1 to $2. If you prefer creative writing assignments instead of doing research , you can write short stories, poetry, and flash fiction. How it Works? Helium pays its members based on three main factors: quality, advertisement interest, and traffic. There are some assignments that are eligible for incentive payment in addition to revenue share. Incentive payments usually range from $1 to $2. In addition to writing articles and contributing to debates, writers can participate in contests. Contests are a fun way to sharpen your writing skills and earn extra cash. If you are a winner, Helium says the money will show up in your account by the end of the week. Another way writers can earn money is through HeliumÃĢ€™s Content Source assignments. These assignments can earn you an upfront payment of $10 to $20. You can also earn money by spreading the word about Helium on your blog, social media account, or website. Feedback The above sounds good right? Ready to sign up? I have learned the hard way before dealing with any site; you must first do your homework. I recently researched different writersÃĢ€™ experiences writing for Helium, and the reviews were a mix of positive and negative responses. In 2011, I started writing for Helium. At first it was very exciting because I could choose from a vast number of assignments and not have to come up with ideas on my own. Then reality set in. First, I discovered up to five writers had the ability to write on the same topic which meant that I had to compete for $1 or $2. Every once in a while I could choose from $2.50 to $5.00 assignments, but this was rare. Another reality I discovered was the fact I could not always see how much revenue I was earning. When I was a contributing writer at Suite101.com, I could always see how much revenue I earned. Helium works on a star system. I didnÃĢ€™t start ÃĢ€ÂÂÂœseeingÃĢ€ revenue until I earned a gold star. My question is, when I lose my gold star, where does my revenue go? Sometimes, when I submitted articles, they would be rejected or deleted if it is not what the publisher is looking for. If you decide to write for Helium, you should make sure that you check for spelling, grammar, typos, and you properly cite your sources. These factors can have an effect on the quality and ranking of your articles. For instance, I had an article rejected because the editor thought I plagiarized. I cleaned up the article and published it elsewhere. In order to get paid, you must earn $25.00 before you can request a payout. Helium will send your payment to your Pay Pal account on the 15th and the last day of each month. You must request a payout the day before the 15th and the last day of each month before midnight GMT. Payments are usually sent out by the end of the date of payment. Sadly, I am still waiting for my $25.86. It took me two years to earn $25.86. I will admit that since I write for other sites, I didnÃĢ€™t put a lot of time into Helium. Recently, I became frustrated with how long it took to receive a payout. In addition, I no longer felt that Helium was worth my time. I no longer saw the point in spending all day doing research, writing, and editing for $1 or $2. I promoted my work on social media sites like Twitter, Facebook, and Google+ to try receive more revenue and traffic. However, there was very little result in sight. The upside to Helium is that I was able to build my portfolio and improve my writing skills. If you believe that Helium is for you, be sure to do your research, read up on their policies, and feedback from other writers. Since I have written for Helium, I have moved on to other writing sites.
