Being a Literate, Should You Remain an Aliterate?

Aliterates are literate people capable of reading and writing more but they do not read or write beyond the limit what they just require to get along with.To put it in other words, the aliterates despite being capable of reading and writing more remain dormant and self-content with the knowledge what they already have and manage to eke out their livelihood for years together. They never try to widen their knowledge and mental horizon by reading more and not even get updated with the latest trends in knowledge or in their own area of specialization.
Being a literate, should you remain an aliterate?

We differentiate people as literate and illiterate on the basis of their ability to read and write. Of late, a new group of people known as aliterates are emerging fast at an alarming rate which may cause a real threat to the human society.

When a teacher or a professor does not read widely and go beyond his academic pursuits, perhaps he may be passing on only an outdated but not updated knowledge to his students. Nor his students may get inspired to become enthusiastic readers.

An avid or a voracious reader, despite aging, remain focused, has a remarkable memory, a fine capacity to concentrate and above all the ability to recall what he has read and  a capacity for taking right decisions coupled with an imaginative mind.Popular political leaders, known for their versatility and silver tongue are constantly on the look out for new, current and updated knowledge and information, eg former Indian Prime Minister Mrs.Indira Gandhi was known for her extempore speeches that were possible only because of her eagerness to learn more and more and constantly updated knowledge.. Besides, in order to feel the pulse of the masses that include people from all age group and from all walks of life, a popular leader has to keep him abreast of things only through constant reading and learning. Another classic example is Jawaharlal Nehru, the former Indian Prime Minister. Besides being a popular political leader, he was an avid reader, a fine orator and an acclaimed writer as well. Similarly the former US President Abraham Lincoln was s fine orator whose inspiring speeches that included his famous  Gettysburg address emanated from his voracious reading of everything that he came across.

As pointed out by Maryanne Wolf, Director of the Center for Reading and Language Research at Tufts University in the United States, “ Through reading, we are forced to construct, to produce narrative, to imagine. Reading gives you a unique pause button for comprehension and insight’ which is not available when you are watching a movie or listening to a tape. Therefore reading has a distinctive advantage over what you see through movies or what you hear from a recorded tape.

Above all a voracious reader becomes a fine writer too. A wide reading enriches his knowledge and vocabulary as well. It refines his grammar, sentence structure, besides improving his writing style distinctly.

A literate, being an aliterate loses all the advantages mentioned above. Hence, he just remains static without any significant improvement in his life. Therefore, it is time to think over, whether by remaining an aliterate, should you lose all the advantages mentioned above?

I really liked this article Rama. I firmly believe that reading is the breath of knowledge and growth...peace Jaz

Great article, it is a trend I've been noticing more and more.  It is rather scarey that so many are so proud to be so stagnant.

I myself thrive on the many hours in a day I spend reading and learning.  Always trying to inquire into new and unusual things.

Remarable post!  It's true that constant Readers become great Leaders.  Sometimes people give in to a lazy mind and that's not good. There is always more to learn, one just needs to take time to do it.  Very good points here.  Love the article Title.  Thanks for sharing

As prolific in speed I have become in reading, I have become to picky in the material I choose to read. Thank you for this enlightening article.

I agree it's not good to be an aliterate.  These are the people who go back to school to improve themselves, but they have a terrible time with their courses because they're just not used to reading.
