The good writing should get its thought to the readers. Thought or ideas in writing should be presented in such a way that it may be fully understood. This may be done through the use of some common methods in paragraph development.

The common methods in paragraph development are; development by specific details, development by comparison and contrast, development by cause and effect, development by definition and development by example.

In the development by comparison and contrast, the structures are so similar that readers can consider the structure as together. The most common form of comparison is analogy where the two things are being relate. In here, the writer can use comparison if the writer wants to emphasize the similarities of two or more things. On the other hand, he or she can use the contrast if he or she wants to emphasize the differences of two or more things.

The development by specific details is considered as one of the most common, simple and effective way of paragraph development. It makes the entire paragraph more explicit in meaning and more interesting as it uses specific details as well as supporting ideas. In here, the writer should give emphasis on the specific orders of things and sequence of events, it is also important to arrange the ideas in order which may be in the chronological form, in time or in the level of importance.

The development using the cause and effect is usually used to explain how something came to be from its cause to its effect or vice versa. This type of development may include a chain of reasoning that will eventually find a cause leading to the prediction of other effects. Here, the writer will tell the readers what will happen next as a result of the action or actions that was taken.

The development by definition usually involves with the implication of thought that is more meaningful than the definition in the dictionary. Through the use of this method, the writer can be able to explain the concept or the idea’s meaning. Giving or showing the details, describing, giving examples as well as analyzing symbols are examples of definition methods.

The paragraph development by examples is usually used to be able to illustrate with the generality of one extended example instead of illustrating the series of details. Through the use of development by examples, the clarity in the paragraph could be developed.
