Recently I have been doing a lot of reading up on article spinning. There have been some requests for it on my job and though I haven't taken any curiosity got the better of me and I decided to look into what it is all about. Not being as computer savvy as many people in the business I was therefore a little surprised to discover that spinning is taking an article and changing adjectives and sentence structure to make the article appear to be original. Someone who is good at spinning can take an article directly off the net and without adding any new content, can make an almost an entirely new article from the someone elses work.
There are actually two types of spinning. One is manual where you do the exchange of sentence structure and adjectives yourself, line by line paragraph by paragraph. The second is automatic or jet spinning where there is an article already written with choices of adjectives supplied and you simply pick the adjectives you want to use.
Spinning is used to increase your views from different sites. Search engines require than an article have a certain percentage of originally to be picked up by them. So, if you want to publish one article on various sites to increase your views and your income then spinning that article might pay off in terms of better SEO and therefore more views. It can also allow you to publish virtually the same article on two websites that require you to have original content as the article you have spun appears to be original when run through copyscape or other websites that check for plagiarism.
At first, I thought that this could lead to many people virtually using others work and passing it off on their own which I thought was kind of dishonest. However, after taking a couple of my own articles and having a go at spinning them I found that spinning requires a great deal of skill and isn't as easy as it appears. For people who are not practiced in this art writing an entirely new article is much faster than trying to spin an old one.
However, spinning can be an asset for a writer wanting to get the most mileage out of their own work and so it might be wise for writers to learn to be proficient at this skill. If nothing else it gives you practice in searching out adjectives that can enhance your overall writing.
The most difficult part of spinning an article is making it appear and sound new without changing the original meaning of the article. This can be quite a feat to achieve. While most of us will never use this method on a regular basis, practicing it can help improve various writing skills so it is a handy tool to put in our writing arsenal.

Hi Rae the reason that factoidz picked up on your article was the two paragraphs. Article spinning means changing something is almost every if not every sentence, so each sentence is fresh.
yep we all do it all the time, especially when we are freelancers working to pay our bills.

I don't remember encountering the term article spinning before, but shortly after I started writing for the Internet, I came across advice to repurpose everything I write. Not everything that works will on one site is necessarily suitable for another, but I try to get as much mileage as I can out of whatever I write. You're right, though, it isn't always easier than just starting from scratch. My latest factoid started out as a combination of two blog posts, but I had to hunt through a lot of books to find a couple of the details I had to add to make it work.

I have never heard of this expression 'spinning an article' before, but have heard of a utility that allegedly generates content for you. An 'article generator.' Curious, (and a bit angry that there might be people actually USING such a tool and competing with others whom write the old fashioned way) I downloaded a free-use 'article generator' and gave it a try. Unless it is something else, all an 'article generator' is, is a template that forces the writer to use 'good form' by forcing them to fill text-fields with data. There is a text field for a TITLE, with recommendations for good title (use of keywords, sum-up the article in 8-10 words, etc.) It suggests to avoid superfluous overuse of boolean words. Example: "How to Train your Dog with Good Manners" is GOOD, while "How Come Snoopy Does Not Come when I Call Him? He Needs to Go to School" is BAD. Other text fields call for Headers, with at least THREE headers in the document and a minimum of THREE paragraphs under EACH header section. There is an option for an UNORDERED LIST and a minimum of 3 LIST ITEMS, -which are sub-points of the main subject. Minimum of three , recommend no more than 7. If there are more than 7-sub-points, then the writer should consider creating a SECOND unordered list, and the template goes so forth. Following the format outlined, an 500-800 word document is created. It does not 'generate content' but it teaches the writer how to create a tight, compact and content-rich document. It was intriguing, educational, but hardly the 'generate a document' that some people were accusing others of using. I also found it unwieldy and somewhat stuffy to use, and merely consider it to be a curiosity rather than any kind of useful writing tool.
No! No! No! STOP IT! Spinning is an idiotic, if I dare say possibly, criminal act! You're hurting yourself, and a myriad of others putting CARP up on the monitors of the world's surfers. Spinning results in idiotic pieces than turn surfers off to ENTIRE DOMAINS therefore hurting your fellow writer. STOP IT! STOP IT! And...don't let me forget to say: STOP IT! I'm truly trying to be a friend by saying this. An important topic like this cannot be "danced around." This is not towards you as a person.
I don't think Martha was talking about spinning articles using a program. Article spinning can be used to provide sets of article for marketing purposes and there is where most of the work comes in. We are not talking about stealing articles and rewriting them! No great crime! Just writing sets of marketing articles.

thanks Louie. Donald. You really missed what article spinning is all about. Say you write an article here on factoidz and want to also include it on your sales web page. Search engines won't pick up the article if it is the exact same. You spin the article for search engine purposes, not to steal another persons ideas. It is your article and your spin. I was not suggested anyone use the computer generated ones. I wasn't even suggesting that we spin our own for publishing. Though there is nothing wrong with that. I was suggesting simply spinning your own article as a way to increase writing skills, as an exercise. Trust me it is not criminal and it is common among professional writers. Sorry to have upset you.
I understand exactly what you meant, Martha, and it is a good idea like Louie suggested for your own material. There are slippery slopes out there, but if you're going to do them, you will anyway one way or the other. Most of us wouldn't copy or steal anyone else's, but maybe I should just think for myself. Anyway, it is an interesting subject - and I would rather know about than not.

I have also seen the big ads on the internet for what I call robot articles and instant article writer, where the ad says the program will write the articles for you about 100 different ways. And I think I have seen some of them before. They don’t look good either. Spinning is a word I have heard in a positive light, meaning the same thing as repurposing your article. An article for a health magazine can be repurposed to make it sell to an airline magazine and a pregnancy magazine and so on. It is just changing it for the market you sell it to or changing the angle of the article. I have also seen some nicely done articles, same articles rewritten but not duplicates, by the same author. The biggest worry anyone has is a robot writer stealing other writer’s works and doing this.

Producing different spun versions of an article using an article spinner software is okay as long as you write the original article to be used for this purpose. In this way you won't be tagged as a content thief. There are lots of article spinner software out there. That will work on some sites but not others. I rewrote at an entire article I wrote Associated Content only leaving 2 paragraphs out of 20 paragraphs the same and posted in Factoidz and they posted it as a duplicate even though 90% of the article was original, but I was still allowed to post it, it just earns less. This is a very good article. I had never heard the term spinning before.
